Fines For Camping In Fast Lane

Bill 441 in W Virginia

Camping in the fast lane could cost drivers hundreds of dollars in a new bill proposed in the West Virginia Legislature.

Senate Bill 441 would allow law enforcement to fine drivers up to $100 for driving at “such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic.”

Drivers with repeat offenses could see fines of up to $200. The new bill would only allow slow driving in the fast lane “when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law,” reported WWMT 3.

The proposed bill would apply to any highway with four lanes in the state of West Virginia and would be upheld by all law enforcement.

Ways to avoid fines:
  • Maintain a consistent and reasonable speed, especially in the fast lane, to avoid impeding traffic flow.
  • Use the fast lane primarily for passing or when traffic conditions necessitate a reduced speed for safety.
  • Stay aware of posted speed limits and adjust speed accordingly to comply with the law.
  • Avoid camping in the fast lane unnecessarily; move to the right lanes when not actively passing.
  • Stay informed about local traffic laws and regulations to prevent repeat offenses and potential higher fines.

The bill currently sits in the Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and needs approval from the full Senate and House of Delegates in order to go into law.
