A Crash: Train Pushes A Truck A Quarter Mile

Train pushes big rig a quarter mile after driver ‘went around the crossbuck’

Video captured in Ohio this week shows a train plowing a big rig down the railroad tracks. The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 19, in Mount Victory, Ohio.

Official report

The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office describes the train vs. truck collision:

The crash occurred at approximately noon at the State Route 31/Main Street crossing. The truck driver, Richard Lavander of Ontario, Canada, attempted to drive around the crossbuck that was down to warn of a nearby traveling train. As the truck went around the crossbuck, an eastbound CSX train struck the truck. The impact separated the truck and trailer, pushing the truck approximately one-quarter of a mile east of the original impact.

Traffic is being diverted from State Route 31 until the wreckage can be investigated and cleared. Two drivers in the train were uninjured, while the driver of the truck was transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the truck, Richard Lavander, was cited for disobeying a railroad crossing device.

We strongly advise being cautious around train-road crossings. We've gathered some tips on how to avoid accidents in this type of situation.

Risk evaluation

  • Do Not Rush: Avoid the temptation to beat the train, no matter how close it may seem.
  • Stop, Look, and Listen: Before crossing, come to a complete stop at the designated line to look around.
  • Pay Attention to Signs: Look out for flashing lights, gates, and warning signals of any kind.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring Signs: Never cross the railroad without paying attention to the signs and signals. They are there for your safety.
  • Risking It: Avoid the dangerous mindset of "I’m going to make it before the train arrives". Trains can be faster and closer than they appear.

Please, use this video as a reminder that you must pay attention to your surroundings even in quiet areas with zero to no cars.
